Common questions about individual and family coverage
Answers from health insurance advisors
When can I apply for health insurance?
Most people enroll during the federal Open Enrollment Period, which runs from November 1 to January 15 each year. However, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you’ve recently lost coverage, moved, married, divorced, or had a baby, or other Qualified Life Event (QLE). Safe Hands Insurance Services can help determine whether you qualify and guide you through the next available enrollment window.
How does the Affordable Care Act help lower costs?
ACA Marketplace plans include premium tax credits based on income and family size, which can significantly reduce monthly costs. Many Texans qualify for these subsidies, and some may also receive cost-sharing reductions to lower deductibles and copays. Our advisors help calculate your eligibility and find the most affordable plan that still meets your healthcare needs.
What’s the difference between individual and ACA Marketplace plans?
All ACA Marketplace plans are individual plans, but not all individual policies are purchased through the Marketplace. The difference is that Marketplace plans may qualify for federal subsidies, while off-exchange individual plans do not. We’ll help you explore both to see which provides the best value and provider access for your situation.
Can I get coverage outside of Open Enrollment?
Yes, if you have a qualifying life event or need temporary protection, you can apply for a Short-Term Health Insurance plan. These policies offer coverage for a few months and can fill gaps while waiting for your next eligibility period. They aren’t ACA-compliant but can still help cover unexpected medical costs.
Are pre-existing conditions covered under these plans?
ACA-compliant health plans cover pre-existing conditions from day one, with no waiting periods or exclusions. Short-term plans, however, generally exclude pre-existing conditions and provide more limited benefits. Safe Hands Insurance Services will explain these differences clearly so you can make the right choice for your health situation.
